The Bergisel is an extremely historic place, as more than two hundred years ago, the army of the Bavarian government and the Tyrolean insurgents fought bloody battles here. On August 13, 1809, the Bavarians were finally defeated and had to withdraw. At the end of the 19th century, this legendary battle was depicted in a huge panoramic painting. The round painting is 1000m² in size and has an elevated platform, on which visitors can also move freely. The artificial landscape, the so-called "faux terrain," makes the events appear extremely real. The images were painted on curved canvas, so they are distorted and have a three-dimensional effect. The giant round painting was brought to London in 1906 and exhibited at the "Royal Austrian Exhibition. During the First World War, it then came to Vienna, where it also survived the Second World War unscathed.
TIROL PANORAMA
Part of the new museum is also the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger Museum, which is connected underground to the TIROL PANORAMA. In this connecting passage, the exhibition "Schauplatz Tirol" is housed, a permanent exhibition with impressive exhibits from Tyrolean history. Here, visitors go on an exciting journey of discovery through important stages of Tyrolean history and immerse themselves in topics such as politics, religion, humans, and nature. Concrete formwork elements have been embedded in the floor here, which are suspended on steel cables and are intended to illustrate the torn nature of political history. In angular columns, visitors can learn a lot about the Tyrolean people, with different doors depicting the typical characteristics of the Tyroleans.
Rich Collections
The Tyrolean Kaiserjäger Museum was opened in 1880 and has been renovated and expanded several times throughout its history. The museum houses interesting collections of maps, uniforms, weapons, flags, and pictures dating from 1816 to 1918. In the Landesgedächtniskapelle, parts of Tyrol's honor books are also preserved, while the Andreas Hofer Gallery commemorates the time of the freedom struggles. From the museum, visitors can also reach the Bergisel via the 2.2 kilometer long panoramic path, where they can enjoy fascinating views of Innsbruck.
