Basically, geocaching works like the classic 'scavenger hunt', but with the contemporary, modern tools of GPS and the internet. Anyone who knows an interesting place or, for example, a great hiking route, can hide a cache at this 'point of interest'. A cache is a (waterproof) container of any size that contains either the 'treasure', a logbook, exchange items, or a puzzle. Often a whole series of caches is hidden, where certain puzzles have to be solved to get from one to the next. The GPS coordinates of a hideout are published along with a description on one of the geocaching databases on the internet, so that other geocachers can start searching.
There are currently over 1 million active caches worldwide, including about 11,000 in Austria.
On the Mieminger Plateau, the Tyrolean holiday region between Seefeld and Reutte with the towns Nassereith, Obsteig, Mieming, and Wildermieming, geocaching has now been discovered for tourism. Three treasures of the Mieminger Plateau & Fernpass Lakes tourist board are already hidden: 'The Home of the Mountain Doctor', 'The Legend of the Treasure Stone', and 'Alm Experience' offer entertaining, exciting puzzle rallies through the enchanting natural and cultural landscape of the Mieminger Plateau, where there is much beauty to discover and knowledge to gain. Guests of the holiday region receive the GPS devices at the tourist board office in Obsteig for free or for a small rental fee as owners of the new guest card (Gold or Silver Card). All necessary documents are also available at the TVB offices or can be downloaded from the TVB homepage (http://www.mieminger-plateau.at/anfrage-service/downloads.html).
Join the exciting treasure hunt in the picturesque nature of the Mieminger Plateau!
