Especially in winter, riding in the spectacular landscape between the Ortler Group and the Dolomites is a truly unique experience. Discovering the dreamlike, deep snow-covered winter landscape on horseback is a real alternative to skiing. You can't yet speak of a proper trend, rather of an insider tip, but demand and offer are growing year by year.
The short one- to two-hour rides in the snow can be booked by anyone who already has some riding experience. Beginners first receive riding lessons for schooling, there is individual or group instruction also available for children. In principle, a guided tour is no problem on the good-natured and well-trained Haflingers. However, for longer trekking tours, you should already have a bit more riding experience and also "seat meat".
If the weather cooperates, riding in the South Tyrolean winter is like a fairy tale: glittering powder snow and clear air truly invite you to go riding. The sure-footed Haflingers or the sturdy Quarter Horses are also ideally suited for winter riding. They are accustomed to the snow and enjoy the rides at least as much as their riders. Moreover, their hooves are specially shod for winter use, special rubber inserts under the irons prevent the snow from being pressed into the hooves, which would be painful for the animals.
When the horse manes blow in the wind and the powder snow dusts up to the saddle blanket, nothing more stands in the way of happiness on the back of the horses. Only one thing can surpass a ride on a brilliantly beautiful winter day: a nocturnal ride! A ride through the snow at full moon is simply a dream. The silence of the night in the face of the pale mountains and the sparkle of the snow crystals in the moonlight are an indescribable experience. It doesn't get any more romantic than this!
