The most beautiful ice skating rinks in South Tyrol

When it gets really cold in winter, South Tyrol is also the perfect ice skating paradise! Countless lakes, natural and artificial ice rinks, and ice halls in all regions of South Tyrol offer plenty of opportunities for enjoyable or even athletic ice skating.

Ice skating is one of the few sports that can truly be practiced from an early age and then well into old age. Ice skating brings generations together and is as much fun for children as it is for adults. Ice skating also offers something for everyone: Some prefer the competitive racing or artistic jumps, while others enjoy the elegant dancing on ice – alone or with a partner.

The traditional pleasure of ice stock sport – not to be confused with curling, which probably originated in Scotland – is also cultivated in South Tyrol. Ice stock sport is not just a sporting event, but above all, it is always a very sociable occasion, both on the ice and afterwards when warming up in a cozy tavern.

The fact that South Tyrol is a good place for ice skating is proven by the reigning multiple European champion in figure skating, the 25-year-old Carolina Kostner, who is from South Tyrol. The beautiful athlete from the Val Gardena was able to win this title in Sheffield for the fourth time in 2012!

Whether you want to glide leisurely on skates or spin pirouettes like figure skating star Carolina Kostner: Exercising in the great outdoors is refreshing and beneficial. The many lakes in South Tyrol are usually frozen in winter and then offer a magnificent ice surface for various (more or less) athletic activities. Particularly beautiful are, for example, the

  • ice-smooth Völser Weiher at the foot of the Sciliar massif
  • or the extensive Reschensee,
  • the Wolfsgrubener See in Klobenstein on the Ritten
  • or the Durnholzer See in the Sarntal.
  • Very romantic are also the natural ice rink in Pfelders
  • or the ice rink in the Gaulschlucht near Lana.

Among the South Tyrolean artificial ice rinks and arenas, especially

  • Arena am Ritten
  • or the ice rink in the Sill in Bolzano,
  • the ice stadiums in Brixen and Bruneck
  • and the Meranarena

are worth mentioning.
