Fishing in South Tyrol

For a long time, South Tyrol has been more than just an insider tip among anglers and fishermen: An enormous variety of fish species as well as diverse types of waters make South Tyrol a true fishing paradise.

The fish population of South Tyrol is impressive. In the 2612 public waters of South Tyrol, there are about 35 species of fish! South Tyrol's water abundance and the great variety of water body types, an intact environment, and the extraordinarily high water quality provide the conditions for this diversity of species. From the wildly romantic mountain stream to the calm river course, from the cold mountain lake to the idyllic pond – rarely is the habitat for fish as diverse as in South Tyrol.

Most of the streams, rivers, and lakes in mountainous areas are so-called salmonid waters and are mainly stocked with trout – brown and rainbow trout. The river sections of the valley lowlands are grayling waters, the lakes in Überetsch and the slowly flowing Adige belong to the cyprinid waters, where carp, tench, and perch are predominant. Other fish species in South Tyrol include whitefish, pike, barbel, char, and pike-perch.

The many different waters also offer exceptionally varied shore landscapes. In the upper river sections mostly rocky, full of driftwood, and with larger and smaller waterfalls, rapids, and pools, in the valleys quiet, atmospheric floodplain landscapes with rich vegetation, there every fisher is guaranteed to find their favorite spot. Boundless peace and relaxation instead of hectic mass tourism: Fishing in the fantastically beautiful natural landscape of South Tyrol is simply a pleasure.

Strict closed seasons and catch quotas secure the valuable diversity of species in South Tyrol's waters and must therefore be strictly observed. Some of the rare and ecologically valuable fish species are even protected all year round. Many fishing waters are also subject to private fishing rights and cannot be used for private fishing. In any case, the prerequisite for fishing is the purchase of a fishing license (guest license), which is available at the respective tourist association. Detailed information about the fishing opportunities and the necessary day tickets for the individual waters can be obtained from the local fishing associations or from your accommodation provider. Tight lines!
