Safety While Hiking - Tips for a Safe Hiking Trip

Whether mountain or valley – a hike in Tyrol and South Tyrol always needs to be well prepared.

In order to safely get from A to B, it is important to keep the following things in mind:

No overestimation of oneself – Hiking is an activity that requires endurance. Therefore, the body should be prepared for the additional challenges. You don't have to set a speed record, rather listen to the speed that your own body dictates. If you are hiking with a partner or in a group, please adjust the pace to the slowest walker, so that no one has to unnecessarily strain their body.

Get informed in advance. Take a detailed look at the weather forecast and, if possible, ask locals who know your area and its specific weather behavior particularly well. In the case of winter hikes, you should also consider the situation reports of the avalanche warning services.

Follow the hiking trail on the map beforehand. Memorize path colors, numbers, and special points such as sights or natural landmarks.

Take only the essentials to keep the weight of your backpack low. However, a few things should always be in your luggage. These include a sweater or jacket, rain protection and sun protection, a first aid kit, provisions and a mobile phone. You can reach the European emergency number 112, and the mountain rescue service under the alpine emergency number 140.

For emergencies, a flashlight is useful in the backpack. With increasing altitude, the concentration of UV radiation also increases – so sun protection means not only sunglasses, cap, or headscarf, but above all also sunscreen with a high sun protection factor.

Take a cue from the onion. With multiple layers of clothing on top of each other, you can better adapt to the weather conditions, which can change quickly at high altitudes.

So that the trip does not become a slippery slide or foot torture

Trust in sturdy footwear that you have already broken in. If your feet are already accustomed to the new shoes, the risk of painful blisters or chafing is much lower. Also pay attention to a proper, coarse-profiled sole with slip resistance. Most hiking accidents happen due to slipping or stumbling. Waterproof shoes will not let you down, even if you have to cross a stream bed.

Stick to the trail markings. Shortcuts through unsecured terrain can trigger rockfalls, destroy plants, disorient you, and in the worst case, even lead to a fall.

For winter hikes, you should also consider the situation reports of the avalanche warning services.

Recharge the batteries from time to time

Take regular breaks so that your body can recover from the exertion. Mineral water and isotonic drinks replenish the fluid and mineral balance and bring you back to the necessary level of concentration and performance. Granola bars, nuts, and dried fruit provide a pleasant feeling of satiety and do not weigh too heavily on the stomach.

Do not leave any garbage behind – in addition to environmental pollution, there is also the risk of a forest fire. Also, avoid making noise and frightening wild animals. The latter can also become a danger to you if they feel threatened.

And last but not least: Always inform friends or family about your hiking plans. This includes the planned route, the expected duration, and of course, accessibility via mobile phone.
