Tiefenbachklamm (Gorge)

The Tiefenbachklamm in the area between Kramsach and Brandenberg has a past as a historical transport route. During the time of the timber rafting, logs were transported to their destination via the waterway.

Tiefenbach Gorge

No easy job, as you had to watch out for the rapids and had to repeatedly put stuck logs back on track. The former Triftsteig, which now serves as a hiking trail, is therefore several hundred years old and would certainly have many exciting stories to tell.

Today, crossing the gorge is a leisurely hike - suitable for families with children. The path has only a slight incline, and railings are installed at tricky spots so that no one has to take the path of the logs. The hike starts in Kramsach. About 3 kilometers after the valley station of the Sonnwendjoch Lift, a parking lot extends in front of you, which also marks the entrance to the Tiefenbachklamm. As you walk through the forest, the Brandenberger Ache roars beneath you. The further you move, the narrower the path becomes, and eventually you reach the mentioned trail, which leads through an impressive rock formation. After covering about 1.5 kilometers, you reach a viewing platform. This is the highest point of the Tiefenbachklamm, and naturally it offers a wild and beautiful view of the turquoise blue water cascades.

Across three bridges to the snack station

The subsequent path then becomes a little narrower, but no need to worry - you don't need to suck in your stomach. Three iron bridges lead directly over the Ache. From them, you can best see the force of the water. Soon after crossing the last bridge, the path widens again. The valley suddenly opens up, and a wide meadow comes into view. And when you see it, it's not far to the refreshment station. The Gasthaus Tiefenbachklamm is open from the end of April to the end of October (as long as the gorge is accessible to visitors). A playground shortens the wait for food for the little ones. The Tyrolean Pfandl or the crispy schnitzel tastes even better on the sun terrace.

An alternative way back

Now, fortified, you have the option to take the same path back to Kramsach, or to continue the excursion - to Brandenberg. It takes about 30 minutes through the next gorge - the Pinegger Klamm. Once you arrive at your destination, you can comfortably be chauffeured back to the starting point by bus.

Before your arrival, take a look at the weather forecast. In case of heavy rain, the gorge may be closed for safety reasons. Sturdy footwear is definitely a requirement. Children should also be equipped with a safety harness, which you can rent for a deposit at Sport-Ossi in Kramsach, at the Gasthaus Tiefenbachklamm, and at the Gasthof Kaiserhaus in Brandenberg.

If you still feel like crossing another gorge: the Kaiserklamm, which Emperor Franz Joseph and his hunting party held dear to their hearts, is not far from here and is definitely worth a visit.
