The hut can be reached on foot from the hamlet of Kandellen at 1560m via trail no. 25 in about 2 hours.
The hut has a breathtaking panorama of the Dolomites from the Rotwand and the Sexten Dolomites to the Tre Cime, Civetta, Geisler peaks and beyond to the Ortler and the Ötztal Alps.
The Pfannhorn (2,663m) also reveals the view of the Hohe Tauern with the Grossglockner, the Dreiherrenspitze and the Venediger. This makes for a rewarding destination for sunrise.
The hiking area around the Bonnerhütte can be described as gentle and calm, with extensive pastureland and well-maintained alpine farming.
Existing high-altitude trails include the Dobbiaco high-altitude trail (no. 24) to Golfen - Hochhorn - Gaishorn - Pfannhorn - Plankenstein -Marchkinkele back to Toblach (walking time 12 hours) and the Bonner high-altitude trail from Toblach station to the Bonnerhütte always along the border (East Tyrol-South Tyrol) to the Schwarzsee (bivouac) to St. Jakob in Defereggental. The Bonnerhütte is also a good overnight accommodation for the 360° East Tyrol hikers.
