The Hofburg, built after 1250 as the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Brixen, served as the bishop's seat until 1964. Its history is evidenced by furnishings, textiles, building plans, maps, documents, and pictures in the historical section. The art section shows the development of sacred art from Romanesque to modern times in sculpture, painting, and arts and crafts. The collection of Romanesque crucifixes and Madonnas, the variety of Gothic sculptures and panel paintings, complemented by medieval manuscripts, are of supraregional importance. The cathedral treasure displays precious goldsmith crosses and ivory artworks.

In the art of the late Gothic period in the Brixen area, the work of Michael Pachers and Hans Klockers dominates, as evidenced by high-quality works. Only around 1530 does the local art open up to the Renaissance brought via Augsburg and Nuremberg. The tour also leads through the baroque court church, which was furnished by Cristoforo Benedetti, J.G.D. Graßmair, and Kaspar Waldmann. The collection of Tyrolean Baroque painters, from which the work of Paul Troger stands out, is also of great importance. The nativity scene collection houses unique large-scale representations by Franz Xaver Nißl and Alois Porbst from 1790 as well as artistically valuable cribs from the 18th century to the mid-20th century.
