Already in the 1970s, a two-week mineral show took place in Teis, organized by the tourist office at irregular intervals. In the 1990s, Paul Fischnaller decided to leave his impressive collection to the municipality of Villnöss, after which parts of it were initially displayed in various premises. In September 1999, the Teis Mineral Museum was then opened on the ground floor of the community center, which is accessible without barriers.
The exhibited minerals, all found by Fischnaller himself, include in particular the famous "Teiser Kugeln". These spheres, up to 20 cm in size, formed in air bubbles in quartz porphyry and were transformed into agates, amethysts, and rock crystals by the infiltration of saline solutions. In addition to finds from Teis, the collection also includes minerals from other alpine areas that Fischnaller traveled to, including other South Tyrolean valleys, Switzerland, the Aosta Valley, the region around Mont Blanc, and Idar Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The museum experience is complemented by a small shop and special temporary exhibitions such as "Flying Jewels II". In 2020, the museum was remodeled and expanded to offer visitors even more insights into the world of minerals. Another destination for mineral enthusiasts in South Tyrol is the Kirchler Mineral Museum in St. Johann in the Ahrntal.
Accessibility: The museum is centrally located in Teis, with parking available nearby. Visitors can reach Teis by bus line 340 from Brixen, or embark on a two-hour hike from Gufidaun near Klausen, or take the three-hour Villnöss valley path from St. Magdalena to Teis.
