The Mining Museum in the Ahrntal, located in the historic granary of Steinhaus, testifies to the rich copper mining history of Prettau, which spanned more than five decades. Steinhaus served as the administrative heart of the mining operation and today houses a museum that keeps the mining culture alive.

The museum pursues an innovative concept by integrating artistic works into its exhibition tour. The photographic exploration by artist Walter Niedermayr explores the relationship between the landscape of the miners and the museum narrative. An impressive installation by Martin Pohl welcomes visitors in the entrance hall with the precious Prettau ore, while the audiovisual works by Carmen Tartarotti draw poignant portraits of people whose lives were shaped by mining in the Ahrntal, enriching the exhibited relics with personal stories.

In addition, the museum offers a wide range of special exhibitions on topics related to art, crafts, and music that illuminate the cultural heritage of mining from various perspectives.

In the show mine located 15 km away in Prettau, more than 20 tunnels and shafts lead to the ore deposit at altitudes of 1400 to 2100 meters above sea level. During the visit, you ride a mine train through the 1100 m long St. Ignaz main adit, where cement copper is still extracted. In 2001, an asthma therapy station was also established in this tunnel.
