On the ground floor (approx. 200 sqm) interesting temporary exhibitions are shown continuously. Educational museum activities complement the offer. The path through the exhibition corresponds to a journey through time. Models, dioramas, experiments, and multimedia stations provide insights into South Tyrol's geological history, the formation and development of habitats.

In the permanent exhibition 'The Geology and Biology of South Tyrol' one can learn a lot about the four typical South Tyrolean landscapes and their geological development. For example, South Tyrol was a volcanic landscape about 275 million years ago, which led to the formation of sediments and subsequently the creation of Gröden sandstone.

In another part of the permanent exhibition, you immerse yourself in the habitats of the high mountains and alpine pastures and gain insight into life in the forest. In addition, visitors can marvel at a real anthill and observe mountain newts in their diving activities in a pond aquarium.

Coral reef in South Tyrol

Where the Dolomites are found today, there was a sea with reefs made of corals, sponges, and algae during the Triassic period. For this reason, a coral reef aquarium has also been set up in the natural history museum, which is home to numerous marine fish as well as hard corals, and also includes sea anemones, giant clams, hermit crabs, and starfish.
