Summary

The rich collections of the museum, traditionally organized according to the subject areas of archaeology, medieval and modern art, as well as folklore, include old holdings such as those of the Association for Christian Art, the Museum Association, and the Bozen State Gymnasium, as well as newer objects mainly purchased by the municipality of Bozen and items donated by private individuals. Visitors to the oldest museum in South Tyrol can expect a precious collection of archaeological finds, evidence of medieval, Gothic and Baroque art, and a significant exhibition of traditional costumes and objects of Tyrolean folk culture. The library, specializing in local archaeology and art history, also provides insight into the Rasmo-von Zallinger estate.

More information

The Bozen City Museum, a cultural flagship of the provincial capital of South Tyrol and the oldest museum in the region, presents an exquisite collection of art and cultural-historical treasures. Located in close proximity to the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology and the world-famous mummy Ötzi, it offers visitors a deep insight into the diverse history and artistic tradition of the area.

Founded in 1882 through the commitment of the bourgeoisie of Bozen, the museum was built on the foundations of the medieval Hurlach residence. The building reflects the Überetscher style, a harmonious fusion of late Gothic and Italian Renaissance elements, and opened its doors in 1905. From the beginning, the museum housed one of the most extensive collections of art and cultural history in South Tyrol, including Romanesque Madonna figures and Gothic room furnishings.

A comprehensive renovation began in 2003 to modernize the building and improve the climatic conditions for the storage of artworks. After careful work, the museum reopened in a limited capacity in 2011, with a selection of approximately 200 works from the 8th to the 20th century, artfully arranged in six rooms and the museum tower. Highlights include stucco work, wooden altars and statues, oil paintings, goldsmithing, stoves and costumes, as well as graphics.

A special gem of the Bozen City Museum is its extensive library, which houses more than 30,000 volumes on art history, archaeology, and history, as well as professional journals. Thanks to modern technologies, these collections are now cataloged and accessible in the online catalog of the city library.

The museum is strategically located on Sparkassenstraße, corner of Museumstraße, directly at the entrance to the pedestrian zone of Bozen. A paid parking lot is available on the other side of the Talfer Bridge at Siegesplatz, and the connection to public transport is excellent, with bus stops in close proximity.
