Halfway from Landeck to St. Anton lies Schnann, an idyllic vacation spot that can boast a remarkably impressive natural monument as a special attraction. The Schnanner Klamm is not far from the village, a well-marked path leads directly to the entrance of the gorge near the village church.
Schnanner Klamm (Gorge)
Over millennia, the Schnanner stream has deeply carved into the rock. The village of Schnann itself is situated on a debris cone of rubble from the gorge, deposited here by the Schnanner stream. According to legend, Schnann was once located further east but was buried by mudslides. Later, a farmer plowing the fields is said to have come across the tip of the church tower of the old village. In the 1990s, today's Schnann was also struck by severe mudslides several times, and the famous gorge was made impassable by the mud and rubble masses. Only after extensive cleanup and restoration work, carried out with great effort, could the gorge be reopened to hikers in 1996. Since then, it has been one of the major attractions in the Arlberg area.
The path through the Schnanner Klamm is an unforgettable experience for both adults and children. Over footbridges and bridges, partly secured with ropes, it goes along the mighty rock walls over the roaring, spray-filled water. The rays of light falling into the narrow gorge create extreme light-dark contrasts and make the water, stones, and occasional greenery magically light up. Smaller and larger waterfalls, whirlpools, and basins make the rushing water bubble and boil. Rarely does one feel the tremendous power of nature so directly.
Hiking and Climbing in the Gorge
If you like, you can continue the hike after the gorge, for example to the Fritzhütte or to the Ansbacher Hütte, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Stanzer Valley.
The Schnanner Klamm is not only a beautiful excursion destination for hikers, but also very popular among climbers. A climbing garden in the gorge boasts a total of 42 routes of up to three rope lengths in difficulty levels 3 to 9. The climbing garden is excellent for families and beginners – not only because of its fantastic and spectacular location. But also experienced sport climbers fully get their money's worth in the sometimes very challenging limestone rock. All routes are fully secured, so no own safety equipment is needed. There is also a bouldering corner with five different walls up to 8 m high.
