From Matrei, the Zedlacher Paradies can be reached in a short car drive via the Virgener Straße. Right after the bridge over the Tauernbach, a narrow road leads about 3 km up to the parking lot in Zedlach. Here, at about 1,500 m above sea level, is the "entrance" to paradise, which can be explored in various ways, depending on your mood. A leisurely stroll among the ancient larches is just as possible as a more extensive hike. If you like, you can hike up to the (managed) Wodenalm and enjoy a tasty snack there. Or you could make a spontaneous detour to the Strumerhof, which is worth a visit not only for the fantastic view over Matrei.
Zedlacher Paradise
The nature trail that leads through the Zedlacher Paradies offers several variations. Information boards explain the forest ecosystem and its special features at seven stations. Also, large, fairytale-like figures created by Matrei's metal artist Erich Trost are along the trail: a 3-meter-tall, forged bear that you can climb into, giant ants, a woodpecker, owls, and much more. Especially for children, these figures are charming and invite you to linger and play.
The ancient larch forest is immensely atmospheric. The trunks of the mighty and gnarled larches, which are up to 7 meters in circumference, are impressive. At over 500 years old, the trees in the Zedlacher Paradies are not quite as old as the famous ancient larches in the South Tyrolean Ultental, which are estimated to be 850 years old; but they have still 'experienced' Columbus' journey to America in 1492 and the entire modern era.
Our tip:
The Zedlacher Paradies is an ideal excursion destination for the whole family. Take your time, because there is a lot for children to discover here.
