Novellaschlucht (Gorge) in Trentino

Even though the stream may seem relatively tranquil in many places today, it still has some sections where it openly displays its wild life force. And evidence of its power is especially evident to visitors in the Novella Gorge, where the water has carved its way through porphyry, phyllite, and dolomite rock since the Ice Age, creating an impressive canyon.

Start your tour in the village of Fondo, which you can reach via the Mendel Pass, and where a parking lot is available at Lake Smeraldo. Take the "Sentiero Mondino" path down into the depths - start the hike at the upper part of the gorge, then move through shady forests and a paved path further down to the gorge floor.
Now head upstream, passing the remains of the former power plant to a wooden bridge. Here you cross the rushing river below and hike on the opposite side a little further downstream. Soon there is a short but steep ascent, which marks the beginning of the so-called "Gamsband". Wire rope safety devices and a characteristic staircase lead you along a rocky path to the village of Dovena at over 1,000 meters above sea level, which with its lovely apple orchards does not fall short of the regional tradition.

The next point of orientation is the Castle of Castelfondo (presumably of Roman origin) - well signposted with corresponding signposts. The path now descends again. Past the castle hill, and back into the Novella Gorge, which now becomes narrower and shrinks the width of the path to just two meters, but reveals fascinating views of the differently colored rock and the dizzying depth. Continue on to Fondo, where you pass through the village and follow the signs to another natural magical gorge ("Orrido") - the gorge at Rio Sass (protective helmets are provided on site). Here you hike upstream past an old mill and finally back through a spectacular narrow pass to Lake Smeralda.

Due to the steep ascents, this tour is classified as moderately difficult. However, it offers great variety (river, forest, rocks, village) and exudes an archaeological flair with a touch of primordiality and adventure in the heart of the gorge. Plan between 3.5 and 4 hours.

As with most gorges, sure-footed hiking is a prerequisite here as well. The gorge offers some cozy places to rest. In Fondo and around Lake Smeralda, you will find some excellent restaurants, inns, and trattorias that guarantee wonderful refreshment from snacks to risotto, pasta, and Schlutzkrapfen, and of course fresh apple specialties. The hike takes place in the area of the Novella River Park "Parco Fluviale Novella".
