1,050 vertical meters / 4h
On the sunny slope of Taufers, at the border to the neighbors in Switzerland, this snowshoe hike takes you through an idyllic piece of South Tyrolean nature.
The starting point for this snowshoe tour is right in the center of Taufers in the Münstertal. Look out for signposts bearing the names Scharljoch and Avignatal. Do not be misled if you occasionally read S-charl Joch. It is one and the same destination, just in a different regional spelling.
Via the Mühlweg and the Avignaweg you will reach the Vallarola stream. Cross it over the bridge and follow the course of the water. Nature awaits you with a varied dress, as meadows and forests alternate during the hike.
You will soon reach a high valley with open meadows. By now, you should have a good view of Piz Starlex, a three-thousander and one of the highest points of the Avignatal. A gentle climb leads you slightly off the toboggan run over the last stretch of the path to the Magitzeralm, where you can take a well-deserved break after the two-hour ascent. There is no place to stop for refreshments here, but as a well-trained hiker, you should always have packed your snack.
Those who want to go even higher can follow the path further up to the Mitteralm and finally to the Scharljoch, which is itself at about 3,000 meters above sea level.
For the approximately five-kilometer-long path from Taufers to the Magitzeralm, you should plan for about two hours, during which you will overcome about 600 vertical meters. The further course from the Magitzeralm to the Scharljoch accounts for another 450 vertical meters and an additional two hours of walking time.
Technically, the route is not a major challenge, however, good physical condition and endurance are required.
