The Martello Valley presents itself as a quiet natural idyll of the Vinschgau and an ideal ground for a snowshoe hike in South Tyrol.
The starting point is the parking lot at the Enzian inn at over 2,000 meters above sea level.
A signposted path branches off from the road, whose signs speak of the Enzianalm and the Pedertal. Soon you will cross the Pedertal stream. Immediately after the stream, trail no. 39 turns left. Here, snowshoes are often already indispensable, as the path is relatively natural and has a steeper slope. So it goes up steep terrain to the Peder-Stieralm at 2,250 meters above sea level. And when you have reached the top, you can take a deep breath because the highest point of this hike has been climbed.
The further way to the Lyfi Alm (trail no. 35) is almost a piece of cake and allows you good recovery after the rapid ascent before. Only very small differences in altitude and a continuous reward with a magnificent view of the Ortler group make the last section of the hike a piece that is easy to manage.
The Lyfi Alm hut serves you in summer as well as in winter at 2,165 meters above sea level with hearty South Tyrolean cuisine - such as dumplings or strudel. On pre-order, they will also be happy to heat up the fondue pot for you. Even overnight stays are possible here - holidays in a snow-covered alpine hut are finally an experience that does not offer itself every day. And the house's own cows, calves, and pigs make every child's heart beat faster.
If you feel drawn back to the valley, the Lyfi Alm trail (no. 8) will eventually lead you back down to the starting point of the hike - the parking lot at the Enzian inn.
The entire tour is about 6 kilometers. In terms of time, this means approximately 2.5 hours of walking time, during which almost 400 meters of altitude are covered. Some advanced technical skill is especially necessary for the steep ascent to the Peder-Stieralm. Otherwise, even with little stamina, you can make good progress on this short tour.
In December, by the way, the highest Christmas market in the Alps, the Martello Christmas market, sets up its tents at the Enzianalm and spreads cheerful holiday spirit.
