From mid-March to the end of October, the slightly more than an hour-long hike (the time you need to cross the gorge itself) is a popular way to immerse yourself in a fabulous world with the whole family. And even though it receives many visitors, the natural wild atmosphere of the gorge has been preserved to this day and knows how to deal perfectly with its magic.
The gorge stretches from Lake Caldaro to the Altenburg hamlet through a slope with dense old tree growth. Along the stream, you hike over wooden walkways and stairs further and further uphill. You should wear sturdy footwear because although the path is well secured, it can naturally become a bit slippery at times.
After passing an impressive waterfall, a viewpoint invites you to an outstanding view of Lake Caldaro and the vineyards. And even further - in the forest above the lake, you can even see the mighty walls of the Leuchtenburg ruins.
Rastenbachklamm (Gorge)
You have now completed approximately half of the gorge hiking trail. You will continue over more steps and bridges. In the upper part, you will come to a junction, from which a path leads to the remains of St. Peter's Church in Altenburg. This ruin is one of the oldest churches in South Tyrol. The origins of this fascinating building date back to the 6th century. At the end of the 18th century, the church was closed and the roof removed. Exposed to harsh weather, it fell into disrepair, and today the former splendor of the interior can only be vaguely guessed at. Researchers also claim to have found a burial site here, which according to legend is supposed to serve as the final resting place of Saint Vigilius. Another theory suggests a prehistoric sacrificial site.
The path to inner peace
The medieval stone bridge that once led to the church no longer exists. Today, a suspension bridge leads to the partially restored ruins, which were reconsecrated in 2000. On the occasion of the preservation measures carried out, the so-called "Kalterer Peace Path" was also created, which motivates inner peace with sculptures created by various artists at seven points of reflection. The path begins in St. Anton in Caldaro, from where the stations of Measure, Prudence, Justice, Faith, and Hope are hiked. The sixth station - as a symbol of courage - is the Rastenbach Gorge, while the church ruins represent the seventh and final station, Love.
Wine retreat in Altenburg
After visiting the church ruins, you will return to the gorge, where the path leads you to Altenburg. Here you will find another opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking panorama. The Schlern, the Rosengarten, the Ritten, and the Salten come into view. In Altenburg, numerous cozy dining options await you - and because, as you can easily see, you are in the middle of the wine-growing area, it is natural to indulge in a noble drop as well.
On further hiking trails, such as the Altenburg hiking trail or the Bärental hiking trail, you can expand the route into a circular tour and eventually return to the starting point on new paths. Plan about 2.5 to 3 hours for the circular hiking trails.
Some parking spaces are available. Depending on where you want to start your hike, you can park your vehicle at the mini golf course at Lake Caldaro, in the Sportzone St. Anton, or in Altenburg directly at the St. Vigilius Church.
