The Bletterbach Gorge was formed during the last ice age around 15,000 years ago. Since then, the Bletterbach has carved a deep gorge into the rock between the villages of Aldein and Radein, which is now often referred to as the "Grand Canyon" of South Tyrol. It is about 8 km long and up to 400 m deep. The stream and erosion have not only shaped the gorge, but also partly bizarre rock formations reminiscent of faces or figures.

Overall, an estimated 10 billion tons of rock have been eroded and transported to the Adige Valley during this process.

In this way, the stream has exposed layer by layer the different geological eras, making them visible even to the layman. Geologists can draw conclusions about their formation from the structure of the rock layers, as well as about the climate and environmental conditions going far back into Earth's history.

Numerous fossils have been and are being found in the gorge, including shells, ammonites, snails, and fish, as well as plant imprints and even dinosaur tracks. The most important fossil finds are exhibited in the Geomuseum in the village of Radein, while the Geoparc Bletterbach visitor center – on the other side of the Bletterbach – primarily showcases the formation of the gorge's rocks. Together, they provide a vivid picture of the geological and historical processes that have shaped the Bletterbach Gorge.

Of course, the gorge itself can also be hiked. Along the Geo-Trail, 16 information panels provide details about the most interesting spots in the gorge and the various rocks, which can be found in all colors: Bozen Quartz Porphyry, Gröden Sandstone, Bellerophon Layers, Werfen Layers, and Sarl Dolomite. The oldest is the Bozen Quartz Porphyry, which was formed around 260 million years ago; the Sarl Dolomite, the youngest layer, is about 240 million years old.

In addition to the various hiking opportunities in and around the Bletterbach Gorge, guided tours are also highly recommended. Trained guides provide unforgettable experiences and valuable knowledge about the formation of the Dolomites. There are also numerous themed hikes, such as orchid, Kneipp, herbal, or legend hikes. With such a wide range of options, there is something for everyone. Embark on a fascinating journey through Earth's history in the Geoparc Bletterbach!
