Gustav Mahler Wildlife Park

A lot of space to move around in nature while observing all kinds of animals - that sounds more than enticing for families with children.

The Gustav Mahler wildlife park in Toblach attracts with the most varied animal voices. In addition to bellowing deer and screeching buzzards, you can also hear the grunting of domestic and wild pigs. Mouflons, deer, donkeys, raccoons, and chickens, eagle owls and snowy owls, even lynxes and wildcats say 'Good night' to each other here. And because children especially like it when animals eat out of their hands, it is advisable to buy a bag of feed at the entrance - the sheep and goats will be particularly happy about it and then allow you to stroke their fur. Here children learn to deal respectfully with the animals and nature in general.

Spacious enclosures and aviaries provide ample shelter for the animal friends

Another attraction for little adventurers is the playground with swings and slides. Anyone who needs to get rid of a lot of energy is best off doing it here.

But what is the meaning behind the name, which seems quite unusual for a wildlife park? Gustav Mahler will be a term familiar to many people. The Austrian composer is considered an illustrious representative of late Romanticism and has brought numerous symphonies to paper - and subsequently to hearing - throughout his life. This includes the '9th Symphony' and the 'Song of the Earth' - and it is precisely these pieces that were created in Toblach, shortly before his death. For this purpose, he retreated to a small composing hut, which he shared with the muse during the summer retreat and which is still located in the area of the wildlife park today. You can, of course, also visit the small wooden hut, and you will quickly find out which creative currents flowed to Mahler on site. A contemplative spot in the midst of nature, which has the power to bring the mind to rest and the soul to dangle.
