Old Town of Brixen: Southern flair and impressive buildings

The city of Brixen, with its more than 1000 years, is the oldest city in Tyrol and was once an important episcopal city as well as an imperial travel station. In 1552, the elephant Soliman also made a stop here.

Also very impressive is the medieval old town with its picturesque arcades, museum treasures, noteworthy sacred buildings as well as excellent restaurants and cafés. The center of the old town is the so-called Cathedral District, where the city's landmark, the Brixen Cathedral with its impressive high altar, is also located. The Cathedral is equipped with valuable marble, using a total of 33 different types. Another highlight is the cloister with its imposing frescoes, which show the work of the Brixen school. Right behind the Brixen Cathedral is the parish church with its striking white tower, which houses a museum. From the Cathedral Square, visitors reach the Bishop's Palace, which houses the Diocesan Museum. The Diocesan Museum displays sacred artworks from the fields of sculpture and painting, and on the ground floor, interested parties can also visit the Nativity Museum. To the right of the Diocesan Museum is the Coach House, where the carriages and horses of the Prince-Bishops were once kept.

The tour through the old town of Brixen then takes you on to the Large and Small Arcades, which invite you to stroll and shop. But the facades of the different arcade houses are also absolutely worth seeing. The Large Arcades received their present shape in the year 1444, with the houses being only as wide as one room, but going deep. Arcade street No. 5 used to be a commercial building, today it houses the town hall. Also, note the last Friday in July, because then the best white wines of the Eisacktal wine producers are presented under the arcades every year, along with South Tyrolean specialties and appropriate musical accompaniment.
