Krampus Run in Dobbiaco

The Krampus, the devilish figure of terror that always accompanies Saint Nicholas, is known throughout the Alpine region. The name derives from the Middle High German word "Krampen" for "claw" or from the Bavarian "Krampn," which means something lifeless, withered, or dried up. Often today, the Krampus tradition has merged with the Perchten customs. However, while the latter are "at home" during the Rauhnächte at the turn of the year, the Krampus is an integral part of the Advent customs. In South Tyrol, where such traditions are maintained with particular care, the Krampuses are both popular and feared. During the Krampus runs around St. Nicholas' Day, they appear in large numbers and spread fear and terror.

Nowadays, however, the Krampuses are no longer satisfied with the role of the terrifying companion to St. Nicholas. In many places, they now organize their own parades – directly from hell, so to speak. The largest of these spectacles takes place annually in Dobbiaco. About 20 groups from South Tyrol, neighboring Austria, and Germany participate in it.

The Krampuses wear large, intricately carved wooden masks with terribly frightening faces and real goat, ibex, or twisted ram's horns. They also wear heavy fur costumes and bells, with which they storm wildly through the streets of Dobbiaco. Naughty children, as well as adults, should then not venture too far out, because no one is safe from the devilish fellows who does not have a clear conscience.

When the Krampus activity comes to an end after about two hours, St. Nicholas also makes an appearance. Brave – and above all good – children who have not been deterred by the hellish spectacle now receive a small gift from St. Nicholas in the main square of Dobbiaco as a reward. Afterwards, a hot Krampus party for real and costumed devils takes place in the festival tent. For all those who need a little break from all the hustle and bustle in between, there is a separate "Krampus-free" zone.

By the way, the Dobbiaco Krampus run is also likely to play a role in one of the next episodes of "Un passo dal cielo," the popular Italian TV series starring Terence Hill. The new season was filmed in the Hochpustertal this year, and as one hears, St. Nicholas and several Krampuses made their appearance in the middle of the most beautiful late summer. We can already be excited about what to expect.
