The Alpenzoo Innsbruck can be reached in a 20-minute walk from the old town of Innsbruck. If you arrive by car, you can leave it in the paid parking lot in front of the entrance. The Hungerburgbahn also quickly brings you to the gates of the animal paradise.
Brown bears, ibexes, deer, chamois, lynxes, and wolves have a home here. Wildcats, marmots, pine martens, otters, and snow hares also feel right at home here. But bison and moose also find a good home in the Alpenzoo.
In the show stable, you will meet representatives of farm animals that were kept as livestock in the Alpine region in earlier times. The amusingly spotted Turopolje pigs have long since become favorites with the public. The robust snouts, which can stay outdoors all year round, are particularly suitable for use in extensive pasture farming. In general, the old livestock breeds are considered to be valuable cultural assets. Here at the Alpenzoo, you can admire the rare animals up close.
Approximately 2,000 animals from around 150 different species make up the zoo's population, which operates as a non-profit association and has been in existence for more than 50 years. The area covers just over four hectares, on which numerous enclosures, aviaries, terrariums, and aquariums have been set up. And when it comes to the complete collection of wild animals from the Alpine region, the Alpenzoo Innsbruck has no competition worldwide.
From the imperial menagerie, which Archduke Ferdinand II established in 1591 at the still existing Weiherburg, the zoo developed over the years into what it is today - a place for the keeping and breeding of native wild animals.
A restaurant and a terrace buffet ensure that your stomach is appropriately rewarded. And for the little ones, there is also a bear cave playground and a climbing wall to the eagle's nest, in addition to the animals. For birthday parties, cool parents can book an adventure tour with sausage snacks, a gift, and a sweet surprise.
