The entire facility is built to a 1:87 scale (H0). The miniature landscapes impress with numerous, lovingly crafted details and interactive elements.
The main attraction is certainly "South Tyrol in Miniature", a reproduction of South Tyrolean landscapes and sights from the Brenner to the Vinschgau. It is the world's largest panoramic representation of South Tyrol in miniature. The castles and palaces of South Tyrol can be discovered here as well as an open-air concert or the nostalgic Ritten Railway.
The "Mittelgebirge" layout is a fantasy landscape with busy traffic on four levels. Many amazing details invite you to linger and observe. For the little visitors of the railway world, there is also a special adventure area. Here they can literally "grasp" the world of model railways, control trains themselves and playfully immerse themselves in the topic. Of course, the adult "locomotive drivers" can also become active here, making the railway world an experience for the whole family.
The basis of the entire exhibition is the extensive collection of model railways by long-time South Tyrol guest Dr. Gunther Steitz, which with over 20,000 pieces is one of the largest private collections in Europe. After extensive planning and preliminary work, the railway world was finally opened in the summer of 2009 in the barn of the Hotel-Restaurant Hanswirt. After about 30,000 visitors stormed the new leisure attraction in the Merano region in the first year, this year new themes and extended opening hours are expected to attract even more interested people.
In the exhibition area, model trains from European and non-European countries and from various eras can now be admired, and the Vinschgau Railway is also a special focus. The Laas Marble Railway is also newly operational, with the entire process of marble transport from the quarry on the mountain via the inclined railway to the storage area at the station being depicted in a computer-controlled sequence.
The opening hours have also been extended to be more visitor-friendly: The railway world can now also be visited on weekends in winter, and in the summer months of July and August, the railway world is open every Tuesday evening until 10 pm!
