In a planetarium – as opposed to an observatory, where one observes the starry sky through a telescope – the universe is artificially created and displayed using optical precision instruments. One of the world's most modern of its kind is the planetarium in the charming silver town of Schwaz in the Lower Inn Valley. Since 2001, visitors can embark on a space journey here, with a 360° video system, a sophisticated sound system, and effect projectors making it possible to roam through the infinity of the cosmos and get so close to the planets that one can almost touch them. The daily and annual movement of the stars, the planetary motions, and various events and phenomena occurring in the cosmos are presented in a generally understandable way and explained in detail. Special children's programs also bring the universe closer to even the youngest.
In a cinema-like, dark room, visitors lie in comfortable reclining chairs and enjoy the spectacle offered. Looking up into the mighty dome, onto the over 100 m² projection surface, one inevitably becomes part of the performance. The Schwaz Planetarium is fully air-conditioned and has been equipped with state-of-the-art FullDome technology since 2006, which allows the presentation of 3D films.
The program at the planetarium ranges from children's films and star fairy tales to music shows to high-caliber scientific and astronomical contributions and documentaries. The quality and brilliance of the performances go hand in hand with the highest entertainment value. The planetarium is also open for numerous special events such as company celebrations or children's birthdays. This variety enables all visitors to select an ideal program. Thus, the planetarium is a cultural and educational institution that has something to offer for all age and educational levels. The Schwaz Planetarium is a perfect excursion destination for the whole family!
