"Gufyland" is the name of this place and it has taken on a particularly honorable task: namely to nurse injured animals found back to health under careful supervision, so that they can soar through the alpine skies as quickly as possible again. Free as a bird. Eagles, falcons, buzzards, but also owls and vultures find new strength here.
The center holds an exceptional position, because you don't see something like this everywhere. Founded in 1989 and moved to its current location in 1998, it was expanded gradually with great passion by the two bird experts Willy Campei and Florian Gamper. Today, about 250 birds find shelter here annually. Visitors can get an idea of the diversity when they visit the residents in the many spacious aviaries.
In order to continue accumulating knowledge, a 300-meter educational trail with informative panels leads from one aviary to another. And soon you will be richer in knowledge about the regional avifauna. Especially impressive for families with children is the daily flight show (from March to November, Tuesday to Sunday, Monday closed), where the kings of the air majestically glide over the Merano region and over the heads of the enthusiastic audience. Afterwards, there is the opportunity to take a very special souvenir – because not many have a photo with an eagle owl at home on the wall.
It is only a short walk from Tirol Castle to the bird station, which can be easily managed with children, and which also offers you a wonderful panorama over the Burgraviate and the Vinschgau. And what's also really great: With the admission price, you help the birds of prey.
