Traffic Rules in South Tyrol - Safe Travels

Anyone traveling by car during their vacation in South Tyrol should take a look at the traffic regulations in advance. We have summarized the most important ones for you.

In South Tyrol, the motorways are marked with green signs, which are usually subject to tolls. The state roads are comparable to the federal and state roads in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany, most of which are well developed and marked in blue. Within localities, the roads are marked with white signs, while points of interest are marked with brown signs. In numerous localities, you will also find black signs with yellow lettering, indicating important commercial areas.

The regulations for using child seats apply to those cars that are registered in South Tyrol. Caution is therefore required when renting a car, as the regulations must also be followed here. A child seat is therefore necessary for children up to 12 years of age or under 1.50 meters. They are only allowed to sit in the front passenger seat if they have reached the age of 10.

Speeds or maximum speeds

On a motorway in South Tyrol, you may travel at a maximum speed of 130 km/h, while on state roads the maximum speed is 90 km/h, unless there are signs indicating a different speed limit. Within a locality, a maximum speed of 50 km/h must be observed. Special regulations apply to vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons: within localities, they may travel at a speed of 50 km/h, while on state roads a maximum speed of 80 km/h or on motorways a maximum speed of 100 km/h must be observed. In many localities, you will find orange boxes that represent automated speed control. On motorways, you will find a control system that is announced where it is in use.

Proper Parking

In South Tyrol, you can tell whether parking is allowed or not by ground markings. Blue markings indicate a paid parking space, while a white ground marking represents a free parking space. Yellow-marked parking spaces are intended for buses and taxis only. If curbs are marked in black and yellow, this means that parking is not allowed here.

Additional regulations

In South Tyrol, seat belt is mandatory for all seats in the car. This regulation also applies to dogs. Using a mobile phone is only allowed with a headset or hands-free system, helmet laws apply to both motorcycles and scooters. In addition, they must have a so-called CE safety mark. Also, don't forget to turn on the lights and carry a yellow reflective vest. A first aid kit and a warning triangle are also mandatory.

Driving Bans and Fines

If you exceed the speed limit by 26 km/h or more in South Tyrol, a driving ban will be imposed. For speeding up to 20 km/h, you must pay a fine of up to 35 euros. If you run a red light, the fine is 170 euros, and the fine for illegal parking is 40 euros. Using a mobile phone while driving is also expensive: a fine of 160 euros is imposed. If you exceed the blood alcohol limit of 0.5, you must pay 530 euros.
