Specifically, the fantastic South Tyrolean wines are the focus and have repeatedly caused a stir internationally. At various wine fairs and wine events across Europe from Merano to Germany to England, top wines from South Tyrol have been a sensation. In Great Britain, for instance, South Tyrolean wines are becoming increasingly popular, which is also impressively evidenced by statistics: in recent years, demand here has increased by over 60 percent!
The variety of grape types certainly contributes to the success of South Tyrolean wines. The mix of autochthonous grape varieties, such as Schiava, Gewürztraminer or Lagrein, and internationally known varieties, such as Riesling, Sauvignon or Pinot, is indicative of a healthy, established wine culture and offers the right wine for every taste and every occasion. Location and climate contribute to the characteristics of these fine wines, but the great care, experience, and skill in cultivation and vinification are also essential.
Vini d’Italia – Italy's most important wine guide – has now ranked several South Tyrolean wines in the highest category (three glasses) in its current 2011 edition. A total of 27 wines have received the coveted award, with South Tyrol having the highest number of awarded wines in relation to the cultivated area, which only makes up 0.7 percent of the total Italian wine-growing area.
The 'White Wine of the Year' also comes from South Tyrol: The Sylvaner 2009 from the Köfererhof winery in Neustift in the Eisack Valley convinced the jury and eclipsed many a famous competitor.
During your vacation in South Tyrol, you can always convince yourself of the quality of the local wines. Whether during the autumnal 'Törggelen', in the taverns or in the numerous gourmet restaurants, or directly during a visit to a winery or a cellar: enjoy the top products of the South Tyrolean winemakers!
