Lake Fennberg
Back to simplicity – that seems to be the motto of Fennberger Lake in the South Tyrolean lowlands. Not far from the border to Trentino, the small body of water slumbers on a terrace of the Fenner high plateau at just over 1,000 meters altitude.

Until it is visited by vacationers in the summer, who treat themselves to a naturally fresh cool-down here. The water quality speaks for itself, the analysis samples leave no doubt open – Fennberger Lake is excellently suited for a healthy bath.
A sunbathing lawn and a wooden jetty – that's all you need here. No showers, no café. And it is precisely this connection to nature that enchants visitors from the start. Make yourself comfortable under one of the shade-giving trees and listen to the sounds of Mother Nature.
The climatic conditions of the region are the reason why the fauna and flora are the same as at Lake Garda, for example. The richness of rare species is so great that the lake has been protected since the end of the 1970s. Many plants that sprout up on the shore are rarely found elsewhere. This includes some species of orchids and buttercups. But also animal representatives such as butterflies, frogs, dragonflies, and crayfish obviously feel very comfortable here. The biotope around the lake (about 10 hectares) is home to many species that are already threatened and find the urgently needed protection here.
The sun as an effective heater
The lake has a size of just over one hectare. At four meters, it is also not the deepest. But you know – the shallower the water, the less hesitation it takes to plunge into the floods of an alpine body of water.
Numerous hiking trails lead past Fennberger Lake through untouched nature. Not far away, the pointed spire of the St. Leonhard church reaches into the sky. So close that it is reflected in the water. Just like the impressive mountain peaks of the surrounding area.
From the village center of Unterfennberg, the bathing lake can be reached on foot in a very short time. Cars should stay away from the nature reserve anyway, and it is worth enjoying the path through the forests to the reed belt on one's own legs.
A short trip to the wine
Very close is also the small wine village of Margreid, located on the South Tyrolean Wine Road. Here you will find wonderful Gothic architecture, winding alleys and mysterious courtyards, which as a whole build a bridge between the flair of the south and the Alpine tradition. And last but not least, the supposedly oldest vine in Europe thrives here, whose origin is supposed to date back to the 17th century and which still delivers grapes for the precious drink today.
