In summer, when the sun is at its strongest, it's nice to take a break from the heat and plunge into the cool waters of the Montiggler Lakes. Surrounded by green mixed forests, the rich blue of the waters glistens enticingly in the idyllic landscape.

The Large Montiggler Lake, with a shoreline of just over two kilometers, is one of the most popular natural swimming lakes in South Tyrol. Bordered on one side by rocks and on the other side by a marshland - and in the middle, water of the highest quality. This is evidenced by the award from the Italian League for the Protection of Birds. The deepest measured point is 11.5 meters, and the altitude is given as 492 meters above sea level. The lake is easily accessible by car or via the various hiking trails in the region, and during the summer months, a shuttle bus collects swimmers to avoid excessive traffic. Good for the environment and good for the nerves of the drivers - a win-win situation.

On the western shore, there are restaurants and accommodations, a generously laid out wooden bathing jetty, and - as a special feature - an outdoor pool. For those who are not quite brave enough to swim in the natural pond, they can also enjoy the bathing pleasures in the public "Lido". This beach resort is located directly on the Large Montiggler Lake and, according to its own information, has the longest water slide in South Tyrol. (Attention: Sliding is only allowed here for a minimum height of 1.35 meters!)

In the lake restaurant, both Italian and South Tyrolean delicacies sizzle and simmer on the stove. You can also treat yourself to an ice-cold drink at the pool bar.

Because the lake is large enough, you also have the opportunity to rent a rowboat and explore the water kingdom on your own.

The Small One

A few hundred meters northeast and slightly higher, at 514 meters above sea level, is the Small Montiggler Lake, which is also surrounded by a green forest. You can only reach the small lake by car before reaching the small lake - you have to park at its big brother and cover the rest of the way on foot or by shuttle. The shoreline is naturally smaller here - 890 meters - but the Small Lake can score points with a greater depth: 15 meters at the deepest point.

Due to the higher altitude and the absence of cars, the noise level here is significantly quieter - perfect for those seeking relaxation. And finding it here is anything but difficult. Rest assured. A sunbathing lawn with a charming, small inn will help you with that.

The small lake also does not need to hide the quality of its water and can point to the excellent test results of the Italian League for the Protection of Birds.

A band that connects both

A hiking and biking route leads around the two lakes, where you can rest as you please, dangle your feet in the water, or jump in for a quick cool down. A wooden walkway through the reed belt allows you to observe the nesting animals and at the same time creates a protective distance to not disturb the peace of the reed inhabitants.

Appiano ★★★★

Nature and tranquillity – but not far from the action. Modern and contemporary, but no standard thing. Attractive gourmet packages, every day, but not everyday. Authentic experiences on the subject of wine, but not just that. An oasis of well-being, but reduced to the essentials.
