With its recognizable shape, this not too high mountain is considered a landmark of South Tyrol. An old legend tells that the so-called Schlern witches would live here - a group of enchanted women who are said to be responsible for severe storms. But don't worry - not all Schlern witches are evil. There is also a kind-hearted one among them.
Völser Weiher (Fiè Pond)
Traces of these beings (witch's chairs, witch's benches) can be found in abundance here as you stroll through the popular hiking area. Parts of the area have been integrated into the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park and are therefore under special protection. This also includes a small lake, which is popular for cooling off in the warm season - the Völser Weiher.
It is located about 12 kilometers above Bolzano. A bus runs from Bolzano to Seis, from where you can reach the lake in a hike of about 1.5 hours - forest experiences and fresh mountain air included.
A lake of noble origin
It is assumed that the water was created in the 16th century by representatives of the nobility as a fish pond. No one is fishing here anymore - nature conservation also includes the protection of the fish, so fishing is prohibited. Located at an altitude of just over 1,000 meters above sea level, and with a maximum depth of 3.5 meters, this alpine lake warms up quite well in the summer months, offering pleasant temperatures for swimmers. However, please note that the southern half of the lake is designated as a biotope and is therefore not accessible to bathers.
But the other half also has its charms - reed belts and carpets of water lilies give the lake a natural-friendly flair. Rowing boats are available for rent for hobby captains to leisurely explore the Völser Weiher. The rocky bottom ensures clear greenish-shimmering water, which has been awarded for its quality several times.
Well-developed infrastructure and best water quality
You will also find a lido with toilet facilities, showers, and a bar here - small amenities that make the holiday experience even more enjoyable. Not far away, a small inn offers culinary delights for the stomach.
Since you are in the holiday region of Seiser Alm, there is also a good selection of accommodations here - such as a romantic tower hotel from the 13th century or a wellness hotel with a wide range of spa programs.
Enjoy your stay at the bathing lake, which rightfully belongs to the cleanest bathing lakes in Italy with the "Vela blu" award.
