Vacation in the South!

Southern South Tyrol - Bolzano

In the south of the region, the Adige Valley widens, and the landscape takes on a gentler shape - marked by carefully tended vineyards and orchards that characterize the region's image. Nestled in these fertile areas, one discovers palms, cypresses, and citrus plants that grow and bloom in full splendor. This unique blend of Mediterranean flora with traditional agriculture creates an atmosphere that enchants visitors and locals alike.

Guest opinion from Markus

The mild temperatures and sun-drenched landscape provide the perfect setting for relaxation and activities. Whether hiking through vineyards and orchards or relaxing in a café, I always feel welcome here. South Tyrol's south is my personal paradise, where I can recharge my energy and enjoy the beauty of nature to the fullest!

Bolzano – urban and open

The economic, political, and cultural center of the region is the provincial capital of Bolzano. The old, traditional trading city has always been bilingual and is characterized by great cultural openness. Here, Tyrolean coziness meets Mediterranean joy of life and the lightness of the south. In the famous arcades, at the fruit market, or at Waltherplatz - life pulsates joyfully and colorfully everywhere. Numerous theaters, museums, and galleries provide a wide range of cultural offerings across all genres. In the heart of the city is the impressive parish church, which now serves as a cathedral. Financed by the city's citizens, it is one of the most spacious churches in the Alpine region. The cathedral, originally consecrated as a Romanesque church in 1180, now impresses with its bell tower, pulpit, late medieval Pietà, late Gothic frescoes, and neo-Gothic side altars.

The Franciscan monastery in the center of Bolzano, which dates back to the 13th century, tells its own story. Particularly worth seeing are the winged altar and the frescoes in the cloister. The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is a must-see for history enthusiasts and houses artifacts from the Old Stone Age to the Carolingian period. The star of the collection is the glacier mummy "Ötzi," which offers fascinating insights into the life of the Neolithic era. An outstanding institution for modern and contemporary art is the Museion, which is presented in an architecturally impressive building. It serves as a platform for the presentation and discussion of contemporary artworks and projects.

The Sarntal - Where Nature meets Tradition

The perfect contrast to urban Bolzano is offered by the Sarntal. Here, one lives down-to-earth, nature-connected tradition and genuine customs, and the surrounding mountains invite you to hike and ski tours. Authenticity is also found in Ritten, north of Bolzano, a place with the flair of traditional and a bit nostalgic summer retreat. The landscape is beautiful, and the famous earth pyramids are unique and impressive. Another geological special feature is the Bletterbach Geoparc near Aldino. In South Tyrol's "Grand Canyon," one embarks on a fascinating journey through the history of the Earth and the formation of the Dolomites.

Authentic Customs

The South has always been of great strategic interest as a gateway to the Alpine passes to the north. In and around the Bolzano Basin alone, we still find 40 medieval castles today - some well-preserved and still impressive, some only as ruins. The largest is the fortress of Sigmundskron, which has been part of mountaineer legend Reinhold Messner's MMM Firmian since 2006 as part of the extensive South Tyrolean museum project. Many other castles perch on the rocks and slopes on both sides of the Adige, such as Haselburg, Hocheppan, Castle Boymont, Castle Runkelstein, known as the "Picture Castle" because of its fantastic frescoes, and in the far south, Castelfeder and Haderburg.

One must also visit the Überetsch, the most important wine-growing region in South Tyrol. Around Lake Caldaro, in the municipalities of Caldaro, Appiano, Cortaccia, and Termeno, the wines are cultivated and pressed for which South Tyrol is famous. They are a delight not only during the autumnal Törggelen.

Active vacation with pleasure program

In summer, South Tyrol's south is also a paradise for mountain lovers. Hiking, mountaineering, climbing - from the picturesque peaks of the Sarntal Alps to the Trudner Horn Nature Park, countless opportunities beckon. For cyclists, there is an extensive network of cycle paths, and for mountain bikers, a wealth of tours of all difficulty levels. In addition, rafting, Nordic walking, horseback riding, tennis, golf, and many other sports are available for active individuals. For swimming, the Monticolo Lakes and Lake Caldaro, the warmest bathing lake in the Alps, are suitable. The holiday region also leaves nothing to be desired for wellness and pleasure vacationers.

The winter vacation in South Tyrol's south is certainly more contemplative and less stressful than elsewhere. If the snow conditions are right: The family-friendly ski areas of Reinswald, Jochgrimm, and Rittner Horn offer pure skiing enjoyment without noise and hustle and bustle. Beautiful, well-groomed cross-country ski trails await cross-country skiers, and tobogganing and ice skating are more than just alternative activities here.
