The geological nature does not make the Ritten a very water-spoiled place. Nevertheless, if you keep your eyes open, you will occasionally find one or the other pond. One of them is the Wolfsgrubner See, which was poured into the landscape at an altitude of just over 1,170 meters in Wolfsgruben, between Unterinn and Oberbozen.
Lake Wolfsgruben
Even in the 1990s, it was heavily populated by algae due to several nutrient-rich inflows, and there was no thought of bathing fun at that time. However, this has been well under control, and today the Wolfsgrubner See is one of the cleanest freshwater lakes in Italy.
This makes it an important meeting point in summer, when hikers and mountain bikers are looking for a place to take a refreshing break from the heat with a jump into the 22 to 24 degree cold waters.
As for the ground, a natural variety awaits you here - from rocky to sandy to muddy. The maximum depth is only four meters, but still offers enough space for a considerable occurrence of fish. It's not just carp and pike that swim around here, but also eels and tench. Much to the delight of the anglers, who position themselves around the lake and dream of a delicious dinner. A day ticket is required for fishing, which you can get at the snack bar at the parking lot opposite the lake. By the way, this parking lot is free of charge.
Many paths lead to the lake
The car is one option. But the Wolfsgrubner See is also easy to reach on foot - from Oberbozen via path No. 15 in about 25 minutes. Wolfsgruben has its own train station, where the Ritten train makes a stop. From here, it's less than 10 minutes on foot.
An additional offer for relaxation
What would relaxation at the bathing lake be without the corresponding sunbathing area? Of course, the Wolfsgrubner See also offers enough space for sunbathing on dry land. Shaded areas are also available. Sun loungers, changing rooms, and toilet facilities complete the offer and provide everything you need. Swimming is not free, but with an entrance fee of 3 EUR for adults (children from 7 to 17 years: 2 EUR), it doesn't make a big hole in your wallet.
And anyone who once feels the natural, refreshing water on their skin will surely agree that it is worth visiting the Wolfsgrubner See.
