This, and the fact that it is surrounded by magnificent natural beauty, also accounts for its popularity. That's why heat-stricken vacationers keep returning to this idyllic swimming lake to enjoy the paradisiacal setting. Surrounded by forests, Piburger Lake slumbers as a natural monument and protected landscape area between the mountains of the Ötztal valley. The glacier movements in the post-ice age are responsible for the rock formation in which the lake once formed. In the shore area, numerous plants grow that have chosen the marshy area as their comfort zone – marsh marigold, swamp skullcap, and various reed and grass species.
Piburger Lake
At the southern end, there is a bathing beach with a sunbathing lawn, a lake restaurant, and a rowboat rental. Here you have easy access to the water without any obstacles. The lake restaurant offers you, in addition to traditional Tyrolean cuisine, a fine selection of fish specialties of the highest freshness – after all, you are sitting directly at the source and the fishermen do their best to bring the catch of the day to your plate. Especially the trout have deservedly achieved great popularity. Those who want to try their luck with fishing can get a license at the Oetz municipal office or directly at the bathing beach. However, please note that there is an extremely limited quota of a maximum of 6 cards per day to protect the fish stock of trout, char, and perch. A pre-reservation can therefore be quite useful here.
Nature conservation with a long history
Declared a natural monument in 1929, the lake and its surroundings, as one of the oldest nature reserves in Tyrol, have special significance for nature-loving visitors who like to let the original and untouched nature of the region have an effect on them. Accordingly, one should also behave here and pay attention to the rules so that the rare animals and plants continue to feel comfortable in their peaceful paradise.
Arrival by hiking boots
To get to Piburger Lake, however, you have to do without a car due to the lack of a developed road. A 20-minute hike takes you from the hamlet of Piburg here. From Oetz, you should expect about 30 minutes. However, it is definitely a path worth taking. After all, the opportunity for pleasantly tempered bathing in the midst of mountain peaks is not too common.
