Plansee

Surrounded by the wooded mountain peaks of the Zwiesel and the Spießberg, the second largest natural lake in Tyrol is located almost 1,000 meters above sea level.

Researchers suspect that it was formed from Stone Age meltwater. Today, it gets its water from a neighbor – the slightly higher located Heiterwanger See.

An approximately 300-meter-long canal connects the two and ensures particularly good water of quality class I. And because the lake is so clear and counts among the purest lakes in Tyrol, one can see up to 15 meters far in the water. Optimal conditions for divers and snorkelers who like to venture here into the depths – and these reach almost 80 meters at the most intense spot.

Movement in the cool water

Sailors and windsurfers also find good wind conditions here and make up a significant portion of the water sports enthusiasts who have taken Plansee to their athlete's heart. In addition, there are rowers and paddlers who draw their energy for high performances from the beautiful sight of the nature surrounding them. However, the largest group is that of swimmers, who can plunge into the refreshingly cool floods in the area of the northeastern shore. As an alpine body of water, Plansee hardly reaches more than 20 degrees Celsius in the summer months. Therefore, the best advice is: Move a lot to keep warm. Of course, there are also beautiful lawns for lying down and moreover a campsite. So if you want to surprise your children with an adventurous back-to-nature trip, this is definitely the place to consider for exciting tent nights.
