The third largest municipality in South Tyrol is Bressanone / Brixen, also one of the most beautiful cities in the country. In the heart of the Eisack Valley, 20,000 people have settled, who appreciate the coexistence of culture and nature as much as the numerous tourists who explore Bressanone / Brixen (Italian Bressanone) year after year. And one thing must be said, in terms of geography, there is plenty of variety. The municipal area ranges from gentle 500 meters above sea level to a stately 2450 meters. Here, mountain and city are literally close to each other. If you want to stay longer, we have put together a fine selection of recommended hotels for you.
An inspiring coexistence has also been agreed upon by 3 different languages. In Bressanone / Brixen Italians, Ladin speakers, and people who have German as their mother tongue live. The latter make up the majority with almost 73%. Anyone who strolls through the beautiful old town immediately enjoys the different languages and cultures. Here a touch of Italian serenity, there a bit of German honesty - an incredibly exciting mix. The mild climate gives the municipality about 300 sunny days a year. This is one of the reasons why life here mainly takes place outside of one's own four walls. Whether shopping in the old town, drinking coffee on the sun terrace, or hiking in the beautiful surroundings - leisure activities are simply more fun with so much sunshine.
Vacation in Bressanone / Brixen
Cultural Treasures in Bressanone / Brixen
Culture and tradition are firmly anchored in Bressanone / Brixen. This is because the delicate city in the Eisack Valley is one of the oldest cities in the country. It was founded in 901, when the Carolingian King Louis the Child lavishly gifted the then Bishop of Sabiona. Nothing less than a whole city should serve as a suitable gift. For Brixen, this handover turned out to be an incredible stroke of luck. For several centuries, the city made a name for itself as a prince-bishopric, and until 1972, Brixen was even considered the official seat of the bishop. The cultural richness of that time is still visible today.
A tour of the city offers everything the heart of a true culture fan desires. Numerous baroque buildings line up, especially the cathedral as the landmark of the city impresses many visitors. Another highlight: the white tower. It belongs to the parish church of St. Michael and towers a proud 72 meters into the sky. The harmony of elements of the Baroque and the Renaissance is shown by the Hofburg in Brixen. Inside the building, the Diocesan Museum houses both the Brixen Cathedral Treasure and many works of art.
An exciting journey into the world of pharmacy is open to visitors of the Brixen Pharmacy Museum. Here you can see how medicines were made a long time ago and what equipment the pharmacies of the past had.
Natural Heritage
However, Brixen is not only rich in cultural but also in natural treasures. Nestled in a wonderful mountain scenery, gentle alpine meadows and challenging climbing routes are within easy reach. The "local mountain" of Brixen is the Plose. In winter, numerous ski slopes invite you to ski, and in summer, it is wonderful for hiking. But that's not all: the Dolomites, the Zillertal Alps, and the Sarntal Alps are just a stone's throw away. A true paradise for all active holidaymakers and nature lovers.
