Urban Atmosphere

Shopping pleasure is highly valued here, which is why there is also the so-called 360° shopping guide. In this reference book, the 70 shops in the city introduce themselves with descriptions and opening hours. Whether traditional craftsmanship, current designer fashion, or culinary specialties of the region - shopping fans will definitely get their money's worth here. Strolling and enjoying is also popular in winter, as the famous Christmas market opens its doors. When the peaks of the surrounding mountains are covered in snow and the contemplative Advent is approaching, it's time for the city to be festively decorated and the first market stalls to open. Lovingly handcrafted products can be purchased here, as well as funny souvenirs and warm gloves and hats. Strengthened by mulled wine and apple strudel, you can enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains - the ideal prelude to the most beautiful time of the year.

… and Alpine Sportiness

For those who prefer to spend their holidays a little more actively, Vipiteno / Sterzing offers numerous leisure activities. The alpine surroundings serve as the perfect backdrop for various winter sports.

  • The Rosskopf, the "local mountain" of the town, is home to the longest artificially snow-covered toboggan run in Italy. On a length of 10 km, a special tobogganing pleasure awaits the whole family. Highlight: the toboggan run is illuminated and open for sledding until midnight on two evenings a week.
  • In summer, the Rosskopf is also the number 1 destination for a varied leisure activities. The sunrise hike to the viewing platform "am Köpfl" is a must-see. Early risers can admire the sunrise behind the fantastic backdrop of the Stubai Alps, Zillertal Alps, and the Dolomites.
  • For young holiday guests, there is no way around the petting zoo "Rossy Park". Fluffy rabbits, cute sheep, sweet ponies, and adorable dwarf goats frolic in a spacious enclosure. The animals are free to roam and, of course, can be thoroughly examined and petted. The more courageous can also go on a short hike (under supervision) with the unusual llamas.

In the middle of Sterzing, at the town square, is one of the most interesting sacred buildings of the Eisack valley, the Holy Spirit Hospital Church. From the outside plain and rather inconspicuous, it harbors wonderful, extremely artistic frescoes on the inside, which are among the most significant testimonies of the Puster Valley school of painting.

In many of the idyllic holiday resorts in South Tyrol and Tyrol, mining played the most economically significant role until not too long ago. Gold, silver, copper, lead, and numerous other metals were mined and brought prosperity and wealth to the mining regions, but especially to the respective rulers, princes, bishops, and merchant lords.
