Your vacation in Campo di Trens

The comparatively very young municipality of Campo di Trens / Freienfeld in South Tyrol is located at a pleasant 937 meters above sea level and attracts pilgrims and many tourists year after year. The total of 2600 inhabitants had to come together in the truest sense of the word, because Freienfeld, as it is known today, has only existed since 1928. That was when the merger of the municipalities Stilfes, Trens and Mauls was decided, which from that point on were counted as part of Campo di Trens / Freienfeld. This decision had mainly pragmatic reasons. At that time, numerous small villages and hamlets had settled around Campo di Trens / Freienfeld, which operated more or less independently. The merger not only created a new administrative district, but also an attractive holiday region.

Here you can experience the four seasons with all your senses. In spring, starting from Campo di Trens / Freienfeld, you can discover the most beautiful places in South Tyrol. Sterzing, Brixen, Merano or even Bolzano are just a stone's throw away and attract with warm spring sun and picturesque places. When summer really heats up, shady hiking trails and cool forests are waiting for big and small visitors. The autumn, typical for the region, is all about culinary delights. Hearty bacon, fresh chestnuts, and young wine taste twice as good in a family atmosphere. After being well fortified, it's time for the winter months. Active holidaymakers have plenty of choices in the cold season: skiing on well-groomed slopes, relaxed cross-country skiing, or fun tobogganing with family and friends. Considering the numerous possibilities, boredom quickly becomes a foreign word here. You can find plenty of hotels or other accommodations for your holiday in the area here.

Pilgrimage site Maria Trens South Tyrol

For centuries, numerous pilgrims have found solace and comfort at the pilgrimage church MariaTrens. It was built in 1498 and over the years developed into the most important pilgrimage site in South Tyrol alongside the well-known Maria Weißenstein. Legend has it that a simple farmer from Maria Trens once found a statue of Mary here. It was completely dirty and covered with mud, but showed no damage at all. The farmer took it, cleaned it, and gave it a place in his house, where he wanted to pray with his family from now on. However, the statue chose another place, and soon the farmer could no longer find it in his house. After some time, he discovered that the statue was in the village chapel. Allegedly, no one had carried it there, it had wandered there on its own. At least that's how the story goes. The pilgrimage church itself now houses a beautiful image of grace, many artistic frescoes, and paintings.

Around Campo di Trens

For those who want to explore the surroundings of the town, an idyllic castle landscape awaits. In the middle of lush forests, the castle Reifenstein (12th century) is located on a small hill. It is still very well preserved and can be visited from April to October. Directly opposite is the castle Sprechenstein with a beautiful Erasmus chapel. Nearby, there is also a real castle. The Welfenstein complex was built around 1895, but over the years it has been very heavily damaged.

The castles and fortresses of the Eisack Valley - South Tyrol

The Eisack valley hosts one of the most important transit routes in the Eastern Alps. The enormous economic and strategic importance of the valley is reflected not least in the many castles and palaces that are strung here almost like pearls on a necklace.
