Barbiano / Barbian

Barbiano / Barbian, the village with the leaning tower, is located in the middle of the fertile cultural landscape of the Eisack Valley. The municipal area extends from the valley floor up to the Rittner Horn, the local mountain of the holiday resort Barbiano / Barbian. In ancient times, when the gorge of the Eisack was still impassable, the Kuntnerweg, the medieval imperial road over the Ritten to Bozen, began in Barbiano.

The landmark of the holiday resort is the strikingly leaning church tower of the parish church of St. Jakobus. In addition to the many smaller and larger churches, the sights include the Friedburg, a former customs building in the Kollmann district, and of course the famous Trostburg on the opposite side of the valley above Waidbruck. The hamlet of Dreikirchen, only accessible on foot with a beautiful hike, is where three small churches, built one after the other, stand at the site of a pagan spring sanctuary, which, by the way, also adorns the municipal coat of arms of Barbiano. Wonderful frescoes and Gothic altarpieces can be discovered in the churches.
