Vacation in Colle Isarco / Gossensass

Right on the Brenner border, less than 10 km north of Sterzing, is Colle Isarco. Gossensass is the northernmost holiday region in Italy and has been a resting place on the way over the Brenner Pass since ancient times.

The name of this popular holiday destination probably comes from "Gotzen," which means miners, and "Sass," the residence. This name reminds us of the heyday of iron and silver mining at the turn of the Middle Ages to modern times, when the region became very prosperous. The traces of this time - miner's houses and the Gothic miner's chapel of St. Barbara - are still abundant today. Other attractions include the baroque parish church and the ruins of Straßberg Castle.

In the 19th century, the second heyday of Colle Isarco / Gossensass began when the Zacharias springs, warm thermal springs, were discovered in the nearby Brennerbad. Hotels and spa facilities were built, celebrities like the poet Henrik Ibsen stayed here, and Colle Isarco / Gossensass became the most important spa town in Tyrol after Meran. The division of Tyrol after the end of the First World War meant the temporary end of the tourism boom. Only recently has Colle Isarco / Gossensass established itself again as a popular holiday destination. Here, you will find relaxation, peace, and wellness, as well as a varied range of leisure activities.

The planned construction of the thermal baths and a thermal hotel is expected to provide further impetus. In summer, the holiday region of Colle Isarco / Gossensass is a hiker's paradise. The nearby main Alpine ridge with the mighty mountain ranges of the Stubai and Zillertal Alps offers plenty of opportunities for hikes of all difficulty levels. Mountain bikers will find plenty of routes to enjoy to their heart's content. Climbing (3 climbing gardens and the high ropes climbing garden in Ladurns), Nordic walking, rafting and canyoning, paragliding, horseback riding, tennis, and swimming in the outdoor pool are part of the further leisure activities for your summer vacation.

In winter, the small but fine Ladurns Pflersch ski area invites you to ski and snowboard. Family-friendliness is the key here, the slopes are snow-sure, and there is a dedicated fun park for snowboarders. In the Pflersch Valley, there are two beautiful, well-prepared cross-country ski trails. Sledding is also part of the holiday offering, with the newest attraction being a 6.5 km long track in the Ladurns ski area for the winter of 2010/2011! Winter or snowshoe hiking and ski touring are also wonderful activities in the mountains around Colle Isarco / Gossensass.

Behavior in the High Mountains

High up, surrounded by a breathtaking mountain panorama, different rules apply than down in the valley. The weather turns faster, a planned tour sometimes requires more effort than expected, and a small misstep can sometimes necessitate an early return.
