Your Vacation in Ridanna / Ridnaun

The charming village of Ridanna / Ridnaun, also known as Ridanna in Italian, is part of the municipality of Ratschings. The idyllic main village is located at an altitude of about 1,300 meters, exuding a pleasant family-friendly and cozy atmosphere. The associated Ridnaun Valley extends from the village, reaching into the Stubai Alps in many places. The valley serves as an ideal starting point for exciting day trips and explorations in the alpine surroundings.

Here, you can also enjoy the simple pleasure of doing nothing. Let your soul dangle or be inspired by the pristine nature during a leisurely stroll, and in the evening, try numerous culinary specialties of the region. No matter what time of year you visit this beautiful spot, there are plenty of leisure activities. Skiing or snowboarding are just as much a part of it as hiking or climbing in the summer.

Mining Tradition Ridanna / Ridnaun

Not only in terms of leisure activities, but also in the field of history, Ridanna / Ridnaun has a lot to offer. The village looks back on a long-standing mining tradition, which still has an impact on the appearance of the municipality and its population today. The focus of the activity was the Schneeberg. For around 900 years, silver, lead, and zinc were mined here at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,600 meters. It was hard work for the miners, but they knew that they could at least secure a livelihood for themselves and their families. The Schneeberg mine was not only one of the highest mines in Europe, but still has an impressive "interior" to this day. Twisting shafts and tunnels extend for almost 150km deep inside the mountain. The operation at the Schneeberg was discontinued in 1985, but the site was by no means shut down.

Over the years, a foam museum, the Mining World Schneeberg, has been established here. Visitors can walk in the footsteps of the old mining operation and experience firsthand how the ore was extracted back then. For demonstration purposes, the facilities are put back into operation during guided tours, while experienced museum staff tell interesting details from the history of mining.

Varied Vacation Time

In addition to the Mining World at the Schneeberg, there are other attractions on the program in the summer. The Gilfenklamm and Burkhardklamm are two impressive destinations that offer a natural spectacle of a special kind. The water rushes down narrow gorges, and along the securely constructed hiking trails, you can get to know the natural environment of the gorge and its animal inhabitants better.

And another leisure tip: a visit to Schloß Wolfsthurn in Mareit-Ratschings. The Baroque castle has been home to the State Museum of Hunting, Game, and Fishing for several years now. On the second floor, you can see the splendid rooms of the castle and learn more about its history. There is also a separate floor for the youngest visitors: here they learn how to read animal tracks and recognize animal sounds. There is also an exciting insight into large bear caves.

Winter vacation
But not only in summer, but also in winter, there is a lot going on in Ridanna / Ridnaun. The well-known biathlon center is located here, so vacationers can benefit from numerous cross-country trails and corresponding training facilities. In the cold season, snowshoe hikes lure even the less experienced through wonderfully snowy valleys and to romantic hills. Skiers and snowboarders, on the other hand, can enjoy loose powder snow and attractive slopes in the nearby Ratschings-Jaufen ski area.

Ridnaun - Schneeberg Mining World and Museum

In many of the idyllic holiday resorts in South Tyrol and Tyrol, mining played the most economically significant role until not too long ago.
