Holiday pleasure at 1,100 meters above sea level

Laion

The almost 2600 inhabitants who have settled in Laion / Lajen and the surrounding villages of Ried, St. Peter, Albions, Tschöfas, Tanirz and Freins already know why. The entire municipal area extends from 470 meters above sea level to 2270 meters, with a large stretch of untouched nature in between. The main town of Laion (1100 meters) has long been used by many vacationers as an ideal starting point for activities and at the same time as a place of retreat. Cozy mountain farms and lovely guesthouses ensure that you can really relax.

In Laion, sustainable tourism is not just a concept, but a lived vacation culture. But that's no wonder given the magnificent mountain scenery. The mighty Dolomites are omnipresent, in the most positive sense. The Val Gardena and the Seiser Alm are just a stone's throw away and offer everything a hiker's heart desires. Lush meadows, shady paths, clear mountain lakes, and in any case a beautiful view of the valley. Particularly sporty vacationers have the opportunity to conquer challenging climbing routes and rugged peaks.

Physical activity is highly valued in this region, and the range of leisure activities is as diverse as it is varied: ice skating, skiing, sledding, and cross-country skiing in winter; hiking, mountain biking, fishing, rafting, and Nordic walking in summer. After so much activity, the region's specialties taste twice as good at the end of the day. Especially in autumn and winter, a must-visit is the cozy "Törggelen" in the warm parlors of the farmers or a hospitable wine tavern.

Of Castles and Churches

Culture enthusiasts can learn a lot about the history of the town and the piety of its inhabitants in and around Laion. Even though it may be hard to believe, the beauty of the region gave early impetus to settle here. The first evidence of prehistoric settlements was found at Wasserbühl; it is believed that they date back to the Bronze Age. Over the centuries, many churches have been built in LaionLaion, whose architecture is impressive. Romanesque elements are juxtaposed with Gothic features, baroque architecture meets impressive sacred paintings.

The parish church of St. Peter, also known to locals as the "Cathedral on the Mountain," rises above the villages and is hard to miss thanks to its unique onion domes. Also worth a visit: The Trostburg, which has been open to the public since 1977. It is not only an impressive building from the outside, but also has a lot to offer inside. In addition to the South Tyrolean Castle Museum, visitors can admire ancient dining rooms and various other rooms here on a daily basis.

Laion's most famous resident

The famous minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide (1168-1230) is almost a household name. He traveled as a singer and poet and enjoyed a high level of fame even then. Not much is known about his birthplace, but it is believed that he was born in Ried near Laion. The Vogelweiderhof, now privately owned, is considered his birthplace and can be visited by appointment through the tourist association.
