Nature paradise at the foot of the Dolomites

Vacation in Funes / Villnöss

The municipal area Funes / Villnöss is located in the beautiful Villnöss Valley and includes the villages of St. Peter, St. Magdalena, St. Valentin, St. Jakob, Coll, and Teis. The 24km long valley stretches from Ruefen and the Geisler Group to the Eisack Valley, which borders it to the north. Here, almost 2500 inhabitants live in harmony with nature. It is above all the imposing Geisler Group that characterizes the appearance of the valley. The Geisler peaks are also depicted in the municipality's coat of arms and are considered a landmark of the entire region. The mountain massif, which extends to the Gröden Valley in the south, towers powerfully above the valley. There is even a real three-thousander in the middle.

  • The Sass Rigais is the most impressive peak of the Geisler Group at 3025 meters above sea level. Other peaks include
  • the Wasserkofel (2942m),
  • Furchetta (3025m),
  • Odla di Valdussa (2936m),
  • Villnösser Odla (2800m),
  • the Große Fermeda (2873m) and
  • the Kleine Fermeda (2814m).

A real paradise for mountaineers, hikers, and active holidaymakers. The UNESCO designation of the Geisler peaks in 2009 as a UNESCO World Heritage site shows that this natural treasure is also worth protecting.

Nature Park Adventure in the Villnöss Valley

In Funes / Villnöss, the heart of the region, the Puez-Geisler Nature Park, is practically right on the doorstep, making the villages in the valley an ideal starting point for exciting hikes and adventurous hours in the nature reserve.
The park covers an area of 10,200 hectares. In many places, this beautiful recreational area is also called the "Dolomites building hut". This designation is due to the geological structure of the park. Here, one can discover all those rock formations, deposits, and weathering traces that are so characteristic of the Dolomites.

Tip: If you spend your holiday in the Villnöss Valley, you should definitely visit the Puez-Geisler Nature Park House in the village of St. Magdalena. There is a lot of variety for young and old. Moreover, there is the opportunity to get to know the natural area around the Geisler Group in a playful way. The smallest nature park visitors can take their first steps on a walkable aerial photograph, while larger nature detectives can explore bird nests, antlers, and much more in the "Wonder Chamber Nature".

Meanwhile, adults can enjoy relaxing hours in the mountain cinema. Here, interesting and educational films are shown that focus on the nature park and the magnificent Dolomites. Those who have had enough of the "theory" can experience the nature park "live" starting from St. Magdalena. Numerous hiking trails lead through the area, past alpine vegetation, clear lakes, and lush meadows. Trained holidaymakers can also start the Dolomite High Route here, as it leads through the nature park area.

Enjoy regional specialties

In the Villnöss Valley, culture and tradition are not just empty words. Here, traditions are celebrated, and in the summer, visitors can also enjoy them.

The "Berg kocht" (The Mountain Cooks) initiative invites you on a special culinary journey. Huts on different alpine pastures offer refreshment and regional specialties.

  • For example, the Schlüterhütte serves a mountaineer's soup pot,
  • at the Zanser Alm, there is bread in the style of grandmother's,
  • and at the Geisler Alm, you can taste typical dishes made from the Brillenschaf sheep.

The Villnöss Alm Enjoyment Card guarantees this unique hiking experience, during which guided hikes and visits to mountain farms are also possible.

You will find a hotel or accommodation for your holiday in this beautiful valley amidst the Geisler in abundance.
