When is the apple blossom in South Tyrol?
The South Tyrolean apple blossom is an annual highlight in spring and a very impressive natural spectacle. Apples are mainly grown in the surroundings of Eppan, in the Eisack Valley, in the Merano region, and in the Vinschgau. In total, there are more than 7,000 apple farmers in South Tyrol who harvest around one million tons of apples every year.
The apples thrive at an altitude of 200 to 1000 meters. In the lower regions, the apple blossom usually starts at the end of March, while in higher elevations it often lasts until the beginning of May. When the apple blossom starts exactly also depends on the severity of the winter. In the Merano region and in Eppan, where a very mild climate prevails, the first apple blossoms are usually seen at the end of March. However, the apple blossom is not only a special visual experience, but also an olfactory one, since at this time there is an indescribable fragrance in the air.
