In the South Tyrolean municipality of Karneid stands the first observatory in South Tyrol, which is run by the Amateur Astronomers Max Velier association. Anyone interested in observing the night sky can take part in a guided tour, which takes place every Thursday evening throughout the year. There is also a lot to learn about astronomy at the Peter Anich Solar Observatory or on the Planet Trail, where the proportions in the solar system are made tangible. The trail takes visitors through forests, meadows, and biotopes, with a hike taking about three hours and being very suitable for families with children. Also very extraordinary are the many sundials that can be found on the facades and in the gardens of the villages Breien, Blumau, Kardaun, Gummer, Karneid, and Steinegg.
Why are stargazers drawn to South Tyrol?
But it is also fascinating at the planetarium, which was built directly on the village square of the town of Gummer. The focus is of course on the stars, but also on cloud formations, the seasons, sunrise and sunset, continental drift, and the formation of the Alps. The universe is presented in 3D using optical precision instruments and accompanied by a special sound system. The planetarium can accommodate up to 55 guests who embark on an exciting journey of discovery into the cosmos. In addition, the planetarium also offers children's tours and it is possible for schools to prepare an individual program on specific topics. Also interesting for the young guests is certainly the Planet Kitchen workshop, where they explore the components of a comet and how it is formed.
Pleasure Full Moon
In addition, guests in the star villages are surprised with special culinary delights and live music during the full moon weeks of the months July to September. In addition, you can look forward to a specially created full moon cocktail.
