Are South Tyroleans Italian or Austrian?

South Tyroleans are citizens of Italy. South Tyrol (or Alto Adige, as it is called in Italian) is an autonomous province in northern Italy. The region was part of Austria-Hungary until the end of World War I but was assigned to Italy according to the provisions of the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919.

The population of South Tyrol is predominantly German-speaking, and many residents culturally identify with both the Italian and the German-Austrian traditions. This leads to a unique blend of Italian and Austrian-German influences in language, culture, cuisine, and traditions.

To accommodate the different ethnic groups, South Tyrol has been granted a high degree of political autonomy, including its own legislative powers in many areas such as education, culture, and local administration. Moreover, both German and Italian are official languages, and Ladin is also spoken in some areas.

The dual identity is an essential part of the South Tyroleans' self-conception. They enjoy the benefits of belonging to Italy, but also maintain their Alpine traditions and their language
