Asked: Why one should follow the tracks of the mountain troops in South Tyrol.

In the heart of the Dolomites, numerous bitter battles took place between the German Alpenkorps and the Austrian mountain troops from May 1916 to November 1917. Today, the region is one of the most fantastic ski areas in the Alps.

If you want to follow in the footsteps of the mountain troops, you can do the tour clockwise or counter-clockwise. The route is about eighty kilometers long, with about half of it being covered on skis. Time and again, you come across notches, tunnels or positions that the soldiers built during World War I, but at the same time you can also let the unique panorama of the surrounding mountains with Sassongher, Conturines, Lagazuoi, Tofana, Cinque Torri, Pelmo, Civetto, Marmolada, or Sella have an effect on you.

The tour starts best in Corvara, from where it then goes over the Passo Campolongo to Arabba. Arabba is a relatively demanding area but has dreamlike slopes, so the mountain enthusiasts fully get their money's worth here. Then it continues to the 3,300 meters high Marmolada, where you can still feel the presence of World War I. The museum at the middle station presents old weapons and bombs as well as the uniforms that the mountain troops wore at that time. This is followed by a twelve-kilometer descent to Malaga Ciapela, where there are two different options to continue the tour.

Continue to Sottoguda

If you still have enough energy reserves, you ski to Sottoguda, or you take the ski bus and then get from Sottoguda to Alleghe in the Civetta ski region. Then partly on skis to Fedare, where a dreamlike scenery awaits the athletes. You swing over perfectly groomed slopes to Bai de Dones and then reach the Falzarego Pass again by bus. With the gondola, the summit stormers then go up to Lagazoi, which is located at an altitude of 2800 meters. Here you should take the opportunity to visit the old tunnels before continuing to Armentarola. Once there, the winter sports enthusiasts can look forward to a ride with the horse-drawn sleigh to St. Kassian. From there, it's only a few slopes until the starting point Corvara is reached again.
