Hiking in South Tyrol vacation: On the trails of Sigmund Freud

In about 1.5 hours, one can reach Klobenstein from Oberbozen along the Freud Promenade, which is named after Sigmund Freud, the well-known founder of psychoanalysis.

Around the turn of the century, numerous guests from Vienna were drawn to the Ritten, among them Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis. "Here on the Ritten, it is divinely beautiful and cozy," he wrote to his friend C.G. Jung, "I have discovered an inexhaustible desire to do nothing, tempered by two hours of reading in new things." Sigmund Freud spent his summer vacation in 1911 at the Hotel Bemelmans-Post, and a few months later, he also celebrated his silver wedding anniversary there. On the occasion of his 150th birthday, the already existing path was then renamed the Freud Promenade.

Well-maintained path

The hiking trail is very well-maintained, mostly finely graveled, and can be walked on all year round. Since it has hardly any inclines, it can also be traveled with a stroller. You walk through meadows and small forest areas, pass by farms and holiday villas, and can also stop at one of the numerous restaurants along the way. Hikers repeatedly enjoy fantastic views of the Dolomites and can take a break on the benches, which have been provided with quotes from Sigmund Freud.

From Oberbozen to Klobenstein

The hike starts in Oberbozen, which can be reached either by cable car or by narrow-gauge railway. Once at the top, you initially walk eastwards along the village street and follow the signs "Klobenstein, Freud Promenade, No. 35". Especially in the summer, the temperatures on the Ritten high plateau are very pleasant, and you can admire the fantastic houses and the abundance of nature that is on display here. At the end of the path, you then turn left and immediately right again, following a forest path before you finally reach Klobenstein.
