The Strudelkopf is a 2307 meter high mountain located in the Prags Dolomites, offering a fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding peaks. The hike starts at the parking lot of Plätzwiese, which can be reached by car or public transportation. The tour is relatively easy and follows well-maintained paths, with only about 300 meters of elevation gain. From the parking lot, the hike leads to the Plätzwiese guesthouse, then continues on a forest path that runs almost flat across the Hochalm. The next stop is the so-called Dürrensteinhütte, which is open in both summer and winter. From there, the trail ascends to the Strudelkopf, with two possible routes: the more leisurely path No. 34 or the ascent via the Strudelkopf-Steig. Once at the Strudelkopfsattel, it only takes about 20 minutes to reach the summit, where an indescribably beautiful view awaits. At the summit, you will also find the first UNESCO World Heritage terrace, an observation platform, of which there are now a total of 20.
Winter Hiking in South Tyrol Vacation: Three Selected Tour Tips
Hike to the Strudelkopf
Warm hospitality in the mountains: An unforgettable experience at the Freundalm in the Ridnaun Valley
Hidden in the heart of the picturesque Ridnauntal valley is a gem that captivates every hiker: the Freundalm. Starting in Obertelfes, this approximately 2.5-hour hike takes mountain lovers through an idyllic winter landscape, past impressive peaks such as the Hochplatt and Jaufenspitze. With an elevation gain of 450 to 500 meters, the tour is a wonderful adventure for young and old.
The starting point of the hike is conveniently located at the entrance of Obertelfes, where ample parking is available. From there, the trail leads uphill and joins hiking trail No. 5, a path that impresses with its breathtaking views and enchanting natural scenery.
A special highlight of the tour is the so-called Witwenbrunnen, a mystical place in the forest that invites you to linger and dream. Following the signs, you will eventually reach the destination of the hike: the rustic Freundalm.
Here, guests are warmly greeted by René, the original hut landlord, and his wife Ingrid with a "Griast Enk." The two run the alp with passion and dedication, supported by their two sons, who enjoy helping out in their free time. The family lives on the alp all year round – accessible in winter only by skidoo, and in summer by jeep.
Ingrid, the master of the kitchen, enchants guests with traditional dishes. Here, you can still find authentic, homemade specialties like bacon, gray cheese, and cheese from their own production. A culinary delight that you simply must try.
René, known for his witty remarks, creates a lively and cozy atmosphere. A visit to the Freundalm is not just a hike, but an experience for the soul. Anyone who doesn't stop here has truly missed out on something in their life.
So, the next time you are in the area, be sure to make a detour to René and his family at the Freundalm. A place that captivates not only with its landscape, but also with the warmth of its hosts.
Hike to the Seiser Alm
The Seiser Alm can also be reached on foot in winter, with the hike starting in Pufels in the Gröden Valley and covering about 580 meters of elevation gain. For the hike, you should plan about 3.5 to 4 hours of walking time. It starts directly at the church in Pufels, from where you then follow trail No. 3. Just a few minutes later, you reach a guesthouse, where you have the option to choose either the right or left path. In the cold season, the path that branches off to the right is more suitable, as it runs on a cleared forest road or through the Pufler Gorge. This path eventually leads to the valley station of Monte Piz or to the Seiser Alm. It is recommended to continue a bit further to Ritsch Schweige, as it offers a fantastic panorama from there.
